These four gang air variable capacitors are very compact, with wide range possibilities. Each gang measures about 26 – 84 pf. The gangs can be connected individually or paralleled in groups by means of gold plated terminals on top and one on the side. Total range (paralleled) is 104 – 336 pf. We hipot tested the gangs to 800 volts throughout most of the range, except at extreme maximum and extreme minimum settings. At these two points, maximum voltage drops to 500 volts.

The case is silver plated (probably brass under the silver) and the gold plated terminals are insulated with G-10 fiberglass board. Shaft is 3/16 inch diameter. Most 1/4 inch shaft couplings can be used with 3/16 inch shafts, or if necessary, easily “shimmed” with a tiny piece of aluminum sheet or flashing. They are 4 inches long overall, X 1.375 inches X 1.375 inches. Weight is 6.5 ounces (185 grams). With two mounting tabs on shaft end. Includes simple hook-up diagram.

Air variable capacitor stock # AC-3 is manufactured by Cardwell, and is Cardwell model # 154-1-15. This capacitor tunes 12-244 pf, and is rated at 2 kv maximum. Shaft is 1/4 inch diameter, and extends 1.5 inches from the front of the body, and 5/8 inches from the back of the body. Has 11 stator plates and 12 rotor plates. Weight is 8.5 ounces, or 240 grams. Condition is removed from equipment, excellent. Measures 2.5 inches wide X 2.5 inches tall X about 3.5 inches long, not including shaft. Including shaft, length overall is 5 inches.

Air variable capacitor stock # AC-2 is brand new, old stock. (May have some tarnish from storage.) These caps measure 16-67 pf, and hipot test to a maximum of 5 kv. (probably rated as 4.5 kv by the manufacturer, but we have no manufacturer's name or part number on this item. Shaft diameter is 1/4 inch, and shaft extends out the front end only, about 1.5 inches from the body.

Body measures 4.6 inches long X 2.75 inches wide X 2.6 inches tall. Overall length including shaft is 5.75 inches. Weight is 11.25 ounces or 320 grams. With 9 rotor plates and 8 stator plates.

Five Gang Loading Capacitor & Gear Reduction

We have acquired good quantity of these extra-nice air variable capacitors, NSN (national stock number) 5910-00-323-0395, manufactured under contract for the US Air Force by Alest, Inc . These 5 gang variables measure approximately 15 - 420 pf per section . This makes the 5 gangs together total at about 75 - 2100 pf . (They are marked as 5 X 370) They hipot test to a little over 1kv . Overall length is 10 inches . Width is 3.25 inches for body of capacitor, and maximum width of gear reduction gang is 4 inches . Body height is 1 . 75 inches . Height of gear reduction gang is 2 . 75 inches . Weight is approximately 3 . 6 pounds .

The front of this capacitor has a 5/8 OD threaded tube protruding from the gear reduction gang . Recessed inside this tube about 1/4 inch is a 1/4 OD splined shaft for tuning . The gear reduction is multi-reduction, and requires 57 turns of the shaft for full travel, giving great precision in tuning without the need of an external vernier drive! Mil-spec all the way, gears are solid brass . The shaft may be connected by means of a 3/8"OD X 1/4 ID coupling tube, which will fit inside the 5/8 OD threaded tube, and slip snugly over the 1/4 splined shaft . A little adhesive inside the coupling tube will give a non-slip connection, and will accept a standard 1/4 inch external shaft for tuning . We can supply s small piece of clear vinyl tubing of these OD / ID's at no charge on request with purchase .

This is an EXCELLENT loading capacitor, with super smooth tuning and excellent resolution . Condition: Most are brand new, military spares . Some may be removed from equipment, excellent. Price: $39 (Refer to our stock number: # AC-6) (Order Now!)

Air variable capacitor stock # AC-7 is manufactured by Cardwell, and is Cardwell model # 154-12-6. This capacitor tunes 11-53 pf, and is rated at 4.5 kv maximum. Shaft is 1/4 inch diameter, and extends 5/8 inches from the front of the body, and 5/8 inches from the back of the body. The back shaft has a nylon gear, which is coupled to a second (stainless) gear below, with 3 : 1 gear reduction.

If desired, the stainless gear is easily removed (by means of a single "C" clip). Has 6 stator plates and 6 rotor plates. Weight is 11 ounces, or 310 grams. Condition is removed from equipment, excellent. Measures 2.5 inches wide X 2.5 inches tall X about 4.5 inches long overall including shaft and gears. Large quantities available.
